HELP YOUR CHILD IN DEVELOPING CRITICAL THINKING SKILLS
Want to help your child in building a foundation for critical thinking? Read our tips below to make them better problem solvers.
One of the most important skills a child can develop in today’s world is to learn to think
critically. In today’s evolving world, kids have to become critical thinkers
for analyzing, comparing, and generating higher-order thinking skills.
Here are
some tips which would help children in building a foundation for critical
thinking:
1. 1. Focus on ‘How?’ and ‘Why?’ rather
then focusing on ‘What?’
Children
should not be restricted only to what a particular thing means, but should a
motivated to go beyond the bare facts of the subject as to know why does that
happen?
2. 2. Pause and wait
Give your
child an ample amount of time to answer or attempt a work thereby generating a
critical response. It would give your child a chance to refine their response
rather than speaking out of their gut.
3. 3. Do not intervene immediately
Avoid
completing or doing the task of your child. Encourage the younger child to try
to solve their problem and develop their functional skills and for the elder
child, ask them critical thinking questions and provide them with information
but don’t solve the problem for them.
4. Metacognition
It means
having the awareness or knowledge about one’s thought process. It helps your
child in thinking about the different ways to understand the problem and helping
them in answering why, where, who, when, and how about the problem.
5. 5. Help children in connecting the dots
A child
should be able to connect with things. By guiding and asking them questions, it
helps them to practice critical thinking skills. It instills the ability to
make a critical analysis of the problem.
6. 6. Encourage critical thinking in new and
diverse ways
Allow your
child to think differently, which would help them hone their creative
problem-solving skills. They learn from observing. Allow them to navigate
problems to develop their critical thinking skills in the long run.
