Road safety awareness for kids

Kids get distracted easily, they should be taught about the rules to stay safe on roads. Kids are inattentive and usually leave their guardian’s hand to run or sprint away.

Parents should teach their children to stay calm and attentive while walking on the road. It is difficult to keep your kid safe all time as you cannot be with them always. Unlike adults, kids are aware of the consequences as they are not mature enough to know what should be done and whatnot, when walking on the roads. Without proper guidance, knowledge, and supervision of road safety rules, kids can put themselves into trouble. Parents should not compromise with the safety of their kids.

Statistics state that approx. 3-5% of people who die due to road accidents are kids. Kids should be taught about road safety rules as soon as they are young enough to step out of the house. Parents should ensure that their kid is practising the rules properly. Road safety awareness should be provided so that the kid is aware of and understand the importance of safety on the road. The main purpose of awareness is to provide necessary precautions and warnings so that the objective of minimizing injuries and fatal consequences can be achieved.

Following are a few basic road safety rules for kids:

· Knowledge about traffic lights and signs, and what each colour indicates.

· Kids should be taught to always look for signals, wait for their turn, and use the pedestrian crossing to cross the road.

· Kids should be taught to stay attentive and calm on the road.

· Encourage your kid to use the sidewalk when walking on the road.

Make learning a fun activity otherwise, kids will not pay attention. Practical experience is important, therefore, teach your kids about the rules practically.

Kids tend to exaggerate what they listen to, therefore, parents should be careful of what they say about road safety, the idea is to make kids aware, not afraid.
