Strategy for tackling homework

Homework has always been a monster for most kids. They never liked it and often felt overburdened by it. The day homework used to complete one felt confident and when it used to be incomplete, one tried hiding it behind excuses or even attempted to hid himself. Every homework can be made a fun activity if done systematically. If you are feeling overwhelmed with homework, use the tips below to set up a good homework strategy and bag the award of “Best Student”.

Make a proper STUDY AREA

Select one area of the house and create the “homework zone.” This area should be free from distractions like television, living area, etc., and should be ideal for working on projects and assignments. Have a proper table and chair to maintain the correct body posture and avoid studying on the bed or sofas. Separating homework from leisure time activities (like sitting in front of the TV) keeps your child focused on the task at hand, freeing up time later on once homework is done.

Keep all the HOMEWORK Essentials Ready

Make a note of all the books and tools before starting the homework and keep it in your homework zone so that you don’t have to leave your place often to bring things. It would save time wasted in searching for materials and supplies.

No DISTRACTIONS

Whether distractions are internal (such as racing thoughts or hunger) or external (like technology or other people), remove them. Shut off your cell phone, TV and ask everyone else in the home to do something relatively quietly. Because these distractions lead to poor understanding and develop frustration.

Agenda

Agendas are a key organizational tool for homework too. Record important tasks and deadlines. This will remind you what needs to be completed for homework each night and will help you record questions to ask the teacher the next day.

PRIORITIZE

Once the agenda is ready, prioritize the task and strategize what has to be done first. It can be tempting to do the easy work before anything else but try to tackle the tougher assignments first. As you will have the most mental energy and focus at the start of homework time, so it’s important to get the most challenging work done first.

TIME management

Select a timeframe to work on homework that best suits you and your family’s needs. It can be right after school or dinner.  Decide how long you will work on homework each day as per your capacity. It can range from 30 minutes to 3 hours. Try to incorporate study breaks for example a short 5-10 minute break every 30 minutes or so offers a chance to regroup and avoid boredom or frustration. Commit to this schedule throughout the whole week. This will build consistency and will get the work done on time.

GUIDANCE

Never ask someone to do your homework. Whenever needed seek help from friends or your parents. If you will ask someone to do your homework today, you will become habitual to it tomorrow. So do your work yourself.

WATCH FRUSTRATION LEVELS

If you feel stressed by homework, or just can’t master the concepts, then it’s time to seek help. Talk to your teacher or seek out after-school tutoring. Inform your parents about it. At times consulting a therapist or counselor is better than dealing with frustration daily by yourself. Fix the problem before it becomes a bigger issue is key to success in school.

Summary

Homework can be a challenging experience, especially when it starts piling up. But with a well-established homework routine, you will build confidence, will be able to manage time and study more effectively. A good Homework strategy will lead to Better Grades.
